Your sponsor must file the request; there is no route for filing it yourself. The government fee is US$10 each time you extend. The national procedure page sets no maximum length or number of extensions.
In Ho Chi Minh City, the filing office is the police immigration office on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street.

Who can file the request for you
The filing falls on whoever invited or sponsors you. Law 47/2014 says so in one sentence.
Người nước ngoài đang tạm trú tại Việt Nam có nhu cầu gia hạn tạm trú phải đề nghị cơ quan, tổ chức, cá nhân mời, bảo lãnh làm thủ tục tại cơ quan quản lý xuất nhập cảnh hoặc cơ quan có thẩm quyền của Bộ Ngoại giao.
A foreigner staying in Vietnam who needs to extend must have the inviting or sponsoring organisation or individual file the request with the immigration authority. Law 47/2014/QH13, Điều 35 khoản 1
The sponsor sends the request letter together with your passport or international travel document directly to the authority.

If your sponsor is a Vietnamese individual
A Vietnamese citizen who sponsors you must be your grandparent, parent, spouse, child or sibling. They must show proof of that relationship.
If your sponsor is an organisation
An organisation that requests an extension must already have a dossier under Article 16(2) of Law 47/2014 at the provincial police immigration office.
Who qualifies
The official conditions are a valid passport, a visa unless you are visa-exempt, and a temporary residence certification issued by the Vietnamese authority. You must be living in Vietnam. You must not be on the list of people refused entry or under a temporary exit suspension.
Steps to extend in Ho Chi Minh City
- Your sponsor files the request; you cannot file it yourself.
- The dossier holds form NA5 and your passport or international travel document.
- File in person on working days during office hours at the provincial police immigration agency. For the city, that is the office on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street. Or file online through a national portal.
- If the dossier is complete and valid, the officer issues an appointment slip and asks for the fee.
- Collect the result on a working day from Monday to Friday. Bring the appointment slip.
Applications are received Monday through Saturday morning, except Tet and public holidays. The city police also say immigration management keeps working on Saturday mornings.

Filing online
Your passport must still reach the receiving agency through the public postal service. You may ask for the result to be posted, and you pay the courier fee.
If the answer is no
A refusal comes in writing or as a notice on the national or Ministry of Public Security portal, with the reason.
If the result is late
If your accepted dossier has no result by the deadline, keep the receipt and contact the immigration office. The office may, case by case, resolve a residence document earlier so you do not overstay.
Form NA5 and the 1 July 2026 revision
The extension uses the declaration form NA5. The NA5 attached to Circular 70/2026/TT-BCA is marked for foreigners staying temporarily in Vietnam. The circular is in force from 1 July 2026.
The new form asks for your latest entry date and the date you are permitted to stay until. Part II is for the hosting organisation or family relative. Files already made or received on the old forms before 1 July 2026 continue to be processed.
The national procedure page still names Circular 22/2023/TT-BCA as the form’s basis. NA6, NA7 and NA8 belong to the separate temporary residence card procedure.

Cost and number of extensions
The fee
The government fee is US$10 for each extension. Circular 28/2026/TT-BTC sets it, and took effect on 1 April 2026. The immigration fees guide lists the other charges.
Fees for foreigners are paid in Vietnamese dong or US dollars. A fee set in dollars can be paid in dollars or in dong at the converted rate.
| Item | Government fee |
|---|---|
| Stay extension, each time | 10 USD |
| Temporary residence card, up to 2 years | 145 USD |
| Temporary residence card, over 2 to 5 years | 155 USD |
| Temporary residence card, over 5 to 10 years | 165 USD |
The fee is not refunded if you do not qualify or refuse the result. If you ask for postal delivery, the courier fee is extra.

How many times can you extend?
Article 35 of Law 47/2014 sets no limit on the number of extensions. The national procedure page names the result as an extended temporary residence certificate and sets no maximum length or number.
The authority considers each request within 5 working days of a complete dossier. Each extension is its own application with its own US$10 fee.
Where to file in Ho Chi Minh City
The Immigration Management Office of the city police is at 196 Nguyen Thi Minh Khai Street, Xuan Hoa Ward. On 1 July 2025 alone it received nearly 200 foreigner cases for visas, extensions or residence cards.
Xuan Hoa Ward is a new unit. The Standing Committee resolution on commune-level units merged two units into it.
The whole of Vo Thi Sau Ward and the remainder of Ward 4 (District 3) become the new Xuan Hoa Ward. Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on commune-level units of Ho Chi Minh City, Điều 1 khoản 6
The office’s own portal still lists Vo Thi Sau Ward, District 3, and the number (028).38.299.398.

Extension or temporary residence card?
An extension adds time to your current stay and costs US$10 each time. A temporary residence card is a separate procedure with its own forms and its own fees. The temporary residence card guide covers it.

Visa-exempt tourists and e-visa holders
For a country Vietnam exempts unilaterally, the border stamp gives 45 days, and the person may be considered for a visa or an extension of stay. The countries in Resolution 44/NQ-CP get 45 days from entry, whatever the purpose. A separate list of European countries gets 45 days for tourism only. The visa exemption guide has both lists.
An e-visa is valid for 90 days at most. The e-visa portal describes the in-Vietnam route as applying for a new visa, with an authority, organisation or individual in Vietnam inviting or guaranteeing you. The e-visa guide covers it.
For most visas the stay at the border equals the visa’s validity.
A DL (tourist) visa valid for more than 30 days is granted 30 days, and an extension is considered under Article 35. So a DL visa valid for 90 days starts with 30 days at the border; have your sponsor file the extension before day 30. The 30-day cut names DL only, not EV. The symbols are in Vietnam visa types.
A holder of the 5-year visa-exemption certificate gets a 6-month temporary residence certificate per entry. With a Vietnamese sponsor and a valid reason, that stay can be extended by up to a further 6 months.

If your stay ends before the decision
Overstaying is fined by length. Under 16 days is fined 500,000-2,000,000 VND for an individual. Deportation may be added as a penalty for overstays of 16 days or more.
An organisation held responsible for the violation is fined at double the individual rate. A foreigner who has already overstayed should go promptly to the immigration office where they are staying to report and get guidance.

The full fine bands are in the overstay fines guide.
